How Do You Relax?

Think about the word “relaxation.” The word might conjure images of white-sand beaches and gently swaying palm trees as the soothing sounds of the waves wash away your worries in a chaise lounge. Maybe you see yourself in the mountains of Japan walking across wood planks from a sauna to the hot springs in a light, gentle snowfall. Or sharing refreshments and great conversation with friends as you soak in a dipping pool. Maybe it’s splashing in the pool with the kids, and relaxing with a book once they’re down for a nap. Seize that idea and build on it.

Once you know how you want to feel in your pool space, you can start to choose a design theme and materials that will bring that feeling to life.

Modern or Rustic… Or Both?

Two design trends dominate when it comes to pool areas: modern, or rustic.

To remind you of a chic spa, you may prefer a sleek modern space focused around a linear design that mixes stone and wood in a tasteful juxtaposition along with monochromatic plantings and neutral colors.

To remind you of a tropical lagoon or a mountain hideaway, you may prefer a natural setting centered around the pool, hot tub, and a majestic stone waterfall, with plenty of irregular shapes, curves, lush and colorful plants, and rustic textures.

It’s no problem if you don’t want to commit to one theme. The most modern trend of all is to mix rustic textures and irregular shapes with clean lines and minimalist design.

You can create a stunning space using bluestone along with more modern materials. Bluestone is native to Pennsylvania and its steely blue-grey color pairs wonderfully with the natural surroundings, as well as with dark-toned natural wood such as teak or cherry, which can be organized around the pool to add structure to an otherwise organic space.

Much like the masonry used in other parts of your landscape (such as an exterior chimney, a retaining wall, or your main patio) natural stone or concrete pavers can be used to make a dramatic statement. Rustic spaces favor more textured earth-toned pavers (or natural paving stones) that let the space blend in with the surroundings. Modern spaces favor neutral tones such as light greys, along with larger format, predominantly smooth pavers that beautifully contrast the textures in the surroundings.

Adding Water to Water

Nothing creates the relaxing atmosphere of a spa-like the presence of moving water. When nobody’s swimming or soaking, a waterfall or fountain will maintain the soothing atmosphere that only moving water can provide. Gently bubbling water from a gorgeous minimalist Japanese fountain provides white noise to create a calm mountain forest atmosphere. The rush of a waterfall is a more intense visual and aural experience. Adding a water feature to your pool and spa area creates the ultimate in relaxation, whether you’re in the water or simply relaxing at the poolside.
