Choose Your Color Scheme Wisely
The last thing you want is to choose a color that you’ll get sick of in a few seasons, so take your time during this phase and choose the colors and materials that you’ll love for many years to come.
Consider your backyard as an extension of your home, a place that invites people to enjoy it all summer long. While you’re probably not thinking about color schemes, you probably do know what you like and what you don’t like.
Tips On Choosing Your Colors
1. Choose your pool color. This means the inside of the pool: whether you want light or deep shades of blue, or other colors. To choose that color, you could think about a pool or other body of water from a vacation that you remember fondly and go from there, or get inspired from travel brochures. After all, your backyard pool should be staycation-worthy!
2. Choose the pool surround colors based on the atmosphere you want to create: a tropical lagoon, a Roman bath, a luxury spa, a mountain getaway, or more. Imagine the pool surround as a beach or stone patio that surrounds a body of water, and recreate the look using color. White sand beaches, endless buff-colored beaches, travertine plazas… the world is your inspiration! The only exception would be black lava beaches - whatever material you use, dark colors will absorb a lot of heat and become uncomfortably hot!
3. The foliage around your pool contributes to the overall vibe and further influences color choices. Choose monochromatic plantings for a serene atmosphere perfect for sophisticated entertaining and of course relaxing, and more vibrant colors for a dynamic space where kids will be splashing the summer away.
4. Keep in mind that the pool area should harmonize with the color of the home. Sticking to neutral whites and pale greys beautifully balances a red brick home or complement a classic New England-style coastal home. Reddish tones such as flagstone could work very well with a more rustic wood-sided home.
5. Don’t just add color with materials. Use landscape lighting to add color after dark! Submersible and land-based lighting can be any number of colors (and you can change out the bulbs to suit the mood).
6. Trust your instincts. Everyone naturally gravitates toward certain color schemes. We all make choices based on the emotional reaction we have to color, tone, or shade. Keep in mind the overall effect that your color choices will have on the energy of the pool area: serene and calm, vibrant and playful, or somewhere in between. Always consider your color tastes and stick with them!
7. Think simplicity. A simple approach is often the most successful. A neutral color scheme goes with everything and lets you use accessories like lounge cushions, potted plants, and sun umbrellas as pops of color throughout your pool area.
